Good wine in UK?

I want some good wine to go with dinner on Valentin'es day. But as I just moved to UK from America, wine isn't really my specialty. For dinner we're having big stuffed pasta, stuffed with cheese, tomatoes, and spinich. As a starter, we're having an italian loaf, sliced ,topped with garlic, sautee'd peppers and mushrooms, and zuchinni, ect. Dessert: Strawberries, chocolate sauce, and whipped cream. he likes red, fruity wines.. I like white, like Saove.. any suggestions?

2. go for an australian wine,i find them alot better than whats on offer at the moment red or white they will get the conversation going in any home..
3. Have some Italian wine, like CHIANTI. Sainsburys has a good one, "Melini" Chianti, for a reasonable price. It gets my wote. A good, fruity wine is also Spanish RIOJA. Do not buy the cheep varieties. Cheers!

5. Pasta dish - a French or Australian Chardonnay, For the starter a light and chilled still red, and for pudding - a sweet (NOT German) dessert wine. I dont like Soave - it is too tangy and is too cheap. Tastes cheap, I mean. Go for French - it is affordable and at the off-licence you can choose a table wine easily. Australian is great, NZ is good and so is Californian. If you go Aussie - Id suggest a Wolf Blass for the Chardonnay or Annie's Lane. Happy Valentines!
6. Go for any Chilean wine white or red, pay about £5 to £10 pounds you cannot go wrong.
7. What you will not find is the range of California wines that you are maybe used to, but if you buy from one of the major supermarkets or Oddbins or Threshers you will not get a bad wine. Quality is excellent and you can buy any wine with full confidence, remembering that the more you pay, the more you get. Thresher will replace or refund your money if you do not like any wine you buy from them For fruity reds, try southern Rhone or Australia or South Africa Shiraz. Every shop will have Soave, for a bit more oomph try New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc. Take the opportunity to experiment -- I think you'll find a much wider range of wines in UK than you'll find back home. Enjoy your stay.
8. A tempranillo (or rioja) would go well if he likes reds....they're not as fruity as say a shiraz bu will go better with your cheese and your meat dish. For yourself try a pinot grigio - nice and light. Go to Tesco or Oddbins if you have one, usually australian/new zealand wines are foolproof but for the roija style reds try spanish or chilean, if you stick to around a fiver a bottle or more for safety and you shouldn't go too badly wrong.
9. I love Asda Bin42 organic chardonnay. Bargain at £4.00 a bottle. The Asda organic red is lush too if you like hangovers.
