Drinking wine on a low carb diet. - low carb dieters only please?

I read a report that wine has less carbs then is reported and will work on a low carb diet. I am doing Atkins and I used the ketostix to determine if drinking wine has any affect on ketosis. To my delighted surprise, I remain in ketosis even when I drink wine. I lost 10 pounds quickly but I have stalled. I don't know if it is the wine or if it is because I have begun strength training. Do any low carbers drink wine and still lose weight?

  2. It could quite easily be because of the strength training. And stalls are normal anyways, they'll happen no matter what. Whether you can drink wine while low-carbing depends on the individual, some are fine with it and some find it gives them problems.
  3. Yup red wine is fine for Atkins in regards to being low carb :) But, there is a but... Though the wine is low carb, there is a catch when it comes to alcohol. As you would know, your body takes a preference to burn carbs for fuel before it burns fat but, there is one form of energy that it prefers, even before carbohydrates and that is alcohol! Whilst alcohol won't take you out of ketosis it will delay fat burning because your body is busy burning off the alcohol instead of body fat or the fat you consume. Personally during weight-loss, I think alcohol should be avoided or kept to occasional for this reason above and also because when we drink we tend to snack. That said weight training can have an effect, particularly at the start, do you take measurements? When weight training it is important to take measurements because though your weight may stay the same or even go up a little your measurements may go down. If they do then it means you are still losing fat as by weight muscle takes up less room then fat.
